What we do, and what it actually involves.

Most of the boards we replace are doing exactly what they were designed to do thirty years ago, which is not what the regulations ask of them now. Old rewireable fuses and boards with no RCD will not trip quickly enough to protect somebody who touches a live conductor.

A modern consumer unit gives each circuit its own RCBO. A fault on the shower no longer takes the sockets out with it, and you can see at a glance which circuit has gone rather than guessing.

Greater Manchester has a lot of houses wired before anybody owned a washing machine, let alone a car that charges overnight. Round-pin sockets, rubber-sheathed cable, or no earth at the light fittings all point the same way: it is a rewire rather than a repair.

Where people are living in the house we work room by room, so you are never without power everywhere at once. A three-bedroom terrace is usually somewhere around nine days.

Every rented property in England needs an Electrical Installation Condition Report at least every five years, and at the start of each new tenancy. For landlords this is a legal requirement rather than a recommendation.

The report tells you the condition of the installation and codes anything that needs attention. C1 means danger present, C2 means potentially dangerous, and C3 is an improvement worth making. C1 and C2 have to be put right within 28 days of the report.

A charge point is not a socket. It needs its own circuit back to the board, its own protection, and the incoming supply has to be able to carry it alongside everything else in the house.

So we check the supply first. If your main fuse or your board cannot take a 7kW unit we will tell you that before you have bought anything, and explain what would have to change.

The breaker that trips at random, the socket that stopped working months ago, the lights that dim when the kettle goes on. Faults like these are almost always one bad connection somewhere, and finding it is most of the work.

We test our way to it rather than guessing and replacing things. Once we know what it is, you get a price for the repair before the repair starts.

Anything from one fitting to a whole shop floor. Most of what we do is downlights, kitchen and bathroom lighting, outdoor and security lighting, and LED upgrades for commercial units.

Swapping failing fluorescent battens for LED usually pays for itself in electricity before long, and the light is considerably better to work under.
